1. The notes of the corrosion for the sliding bearings

As the main bearing pad and connecting rod bearing of the sliding bearings, the main malfunction during work is the peeling or burning loss of the antifriction alloy and the abrasion of the bearing in the early stage.

The surface of the bearing pad will have quick breakage or heavy wear after the short term operation of the diesel. The situation is not caused by the bearing pad itself but by the badness of the using conditions or matching parts or technical condition.

One survey shows that 44.9% of the bearing pad breakage is caused by impurities, 13.4% is unfitting assembly, 12.7% is the bad concentricity, 10.8% is bad lubrication, 9.5% is overload and the others are corrosion etc. The bearings always in the critical lubrication statement during the start and stop of the diesel, which can interrupt the oil slick to contact the friction surface directly. Even if during the normal operation of the diesel, the journal and bearing are hard to lubricate liquid steadily and continuously because of the unsteady loading factors.

In addition, the diesel will have dust and dirt invasion during its operation because the moulding sands and burr in new diesel is not cleared up. It is also the main reason for the accelerated wear and bearing burnt-out. And the main reason for bearings peeling is caused by fatigue damage. Since the force and direction of the bearing load change as time, when the load is unsteady, there is not uniform and continuous oil slick among the friction surface of the bearings. Moreover, the pressure of the oil slick also changes in a pulse type. At the minimal thickness of the oil slick, parts of the loading surface will have high temperature and it reduces the fatigue resistance greatly of the alloy layer. And the low quality manufacturing and assembly of the bearing itself is also the direct reason for the peeling of the alloy layer.

2. The surface failure of the rolling bearings

The failure modes of the rolling bearings are surface contact fatigue, abrasive wear, adhesive wear and corrosive wear. All the wear happens in the working surface and surface layer of the bearings. Obviously, it is very important for quality of the working surface to guarantee the reliability and usage life of the bearings.

The working surface quality research for the rolling bearings includes: surface topography analysis, surface material and surface denatured layer analysis, surface stress state analysis, surface abrasion state and corrosive s microcosmic structure and physical, chemical and mechanical properties state analysis etc.
Because of the influences on the cold and hot working conditions and lubrication medium, the microcosmic structure and physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the bearings surface always have big difference between it centre part. The microcosmic structure and physical, chemical and mechanical properties of changed bearing surface is the surface denatured layer. If the surface denatured layer is caused by the ground finish, then it is grinding surface denatured layer. The analysis of the working surface denatured layer of the rolling bearings is the main part of the imported bearing surface quality analysis and it is also one of the important parts of the failure analysis of the bearings.
